Just two months ago Russell was running out for Ayr against Gala in the top tier of the Scottish club game.
But fast forward to last Friday and the 21-year-old was handed the No.10 shirt as Glasgow Warriors faced off against Munster in their RaboDirect PRO12 semi-final.
Such was Russell's performance in the 16-15 victory that he played his way into Vern Cotter's new-look Scotland squad for their summer tour.
And with the likes of Ruaridh Jackson and Duncan Weir also at the club, Russell insists it is a dream come true to have helped propel the Warriors to the RaboDirect PRO12 showpiece.
"Two months back I was playing for Ayr in the Premiership against Gala and to come from that a few weeks ago to winning a PRO12 semi-final is hard to comprehend," Finn told the Glasgow Evening Times.
"My aims at the start of the year were just to make sure that every time Ruaridh or Duncy were away with Scotland that I got the nod and then to try and make the most of that opportunity.
"So it's just brilliant to get as many games as I have and hopefully I have repaid Gregor Townsend for his faith in me.
"But although it has been an unbelievable season for me and totally surpassed my wildest dreams, it isn't finished yet.
"We have one game left and that is Leinster in the final. After playing in the semi it just makes you desperate to run out at the RDS."
