Warburton and Justin Tipuric, Wales' first-choice opensides, both miss the upcoming tour to South Africa with shoulder injuries - handing Shingler a chance.
And he insists that he is fully prepared with coming up against a powerful Springboks back row, containing the likes of Duane Vermeulen and Francois Louw.
Shingler made 14 appearances for the Scarlets in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season and told WalesOnline: "I'm probably viewing it as my big chance.
"I've not played for Wales for a while so I would be happy to get an opportunity out there - it's going to be one hell of a battle!
"Of course it's a real challenge playing against South Africa - they have got a good, powerful and physical back row but I can definitely do a job at seven.
"I'm comfortable with that role. I will play my game and hopefully perform."
Shingler is a natural blindside flanker but insists that he feels comfortable anywhere on the back row and is relishing the opportunity to move across the pack this summer.
"I have been switched around a lot in my career. I started in the second row and two summers ago in Australia I had a go at No.8," he said
"I'm very comfortable playing six because it is where I have played most often but when you play a new position it's very exciting, a new experience and sometimes there's a bit less pressure to do yourself justice."
