Ospreys narrowly missed out on the play-off spots last season after being pipped to the post by Ulster.
Defeat in their penultimate match against Italian outfit Zebre all-but ended Ospreys' hopes of a play-off berth and condemned them to an agonising fifth place finish.
It is a moment that Beck has not forgotten and now he is looking for his side to put last season's hurt behind them and go one step further.
"If we're going to break the dominance of the Irish in the PRO12 we need to get back to doing the basics well," said Beck.
"Last year we were so close to getting into the top four after leaving ourselves with quite a bit to do.
"It was so disappointing to miss out but it happens and hopefully now, after making some good signings, we can get back in.
"From what I've seen at training we look a lot sharper and a lot more boys in the team know their role. Hopefully this season there are no excuses and we can crack back into the top four."
