Peter Horne's late penalty granted the Warriors a 19-16 success at Scotstoun, an outcome that stretched their lead at the top of the PRO12 table to four points and moved them seven points clear of the now-fifth placed Ospreys.
The result also ensured the Scottish club made it three wins in a row after victories over the Scarlets and Zebre, but there was no doubting which of the recent triumphs most impressed Townsend.
"It was a tremendous win. I thought going into the game that if we managed to win it would be one of our best for a number of seasons," he told the club website.
"The way we played in the first 20 minutes, our quality was really high and our pace and attitude were fantastic.
"Ospreys are a very good side. They kept on playing and kept on competing for contact so we had to dig deep to get the win.
"It's very tight at the top, we play Munster in our next game and Leinster in three games time, so we need to make sure we are still up there after the 6 Nations."
The Glasgow head coach also echoed the post-match words of hooker and try-scorer Pat MacArthur by suggesting the win provided evidence of the quality at his disposal.
"It shows our depth, Fraser Lyle and Ali Price were outstanding at the heart of a lot of good rugby in the first half," he added.
"Peter Horne did very well, he put a lot of pace into the game in the first half and had a brilliant ruck clear leading to Pat's try.
"He's been really professional and hard working for the last two weeks and over the last few seasons."Follow us on Facebook, join the conversation on Twitter, sign up to our YouTube channel for extensive match highlights and sign up for our newsletter for regular updates on the GUINNESS PRO12
