Now he is in contention to feature at Twickenham once more and the Glasgow Warriors winger is hoping for a similar outcome - albeit with a better result.
With Warriors teammate Sean Lamont injured, Maitland has been called up to the Scotland squad by Vern Cotter.
The 26-year-old has not featured in the GUINNESS PRO12 since a clash with Edinburgh in January, courtesy of a shoulder injury he picked up in Europe.
But should he take to the field at Twickenham on Saturday, he is hoping to make the same sort of impact that he did in a 38-18 defeat in 2013.
"It was a bit of a blur, it went so fast," said Maitland. "With 85-90,000 people there, it was an amazing place to make my debut, especially against England.
"I had mixed feelings, like scoring my first try on my debut but not the team performance we wanted, coming away with a loss.
"It seems so long ago because it has gone so fast, but hopefully I get another opportunity this week.
"We need to find that right balance of knowing when to kick and knowing when to attack, and just getting our shape right, filling the field and trying to attack them.
"We have to go down there and have an attacking mindset if we want to take that cup home."
