For their part, the visitors slipped to a first defeat of the campaign at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park last Friday - going down 23-19 to Cardiff Blues - although they did battle back from 13-0 down to set up a grandstand finish.
Townsend knows there are improvements to be made if his troops want to send Ulster back to Ireland with a first defeat of the campaign but believes there are enough positives from the Blues loss to build upon. "To come back from 13-0 down and play some really positive rugby in the second quarter of the game was good to see,"
Townsend told the Glasgow Warriors official website. "We created opportunities to lead the game, but over the 80 minutes we didn't do enough to win and lost focus on a couple of occasions.
"I thought our ball carrying and work to support the ball carrier in the first half in particular was very good. "We're obviously disappointed that we didn't come away with the win after the effort we put in and we've got to re-group for [Ulster].
"We've had recovering to do because that was a physical game. We've had to make sure that we're working to improve because we have another huge challenge against Ulster.
"We are facing another in-form team that shows just how contested the Guinness PRO12 is going to be this season."
