O'Driscoll was always an all-rounder

O'Driscoll has been with Leinster for 15 years and he is looking to bow out by lifting a second straight RaboDirect PRO12 title this weekend.

He has also toured with the British & Irish Lions on four occasions and represented Ireland in 133 Test matches.

Now 35, he will play his final game at the top but it wasn't until the age of 11 that O'Driscoll came across the sport he has dominated for so long.

Dad Frank can remember a time when the youngster was weighing up a number of options - though rugby was eventually the one that grabbed him most convincingly.

"Ball games, ball games, ball games," O'Driscoll Sr told the Irish Times.

"He had a ball at the dinner table. He'd be eating with one hand and he'd be firing a ball in the air with the other.

"If Wimbledon was on, he'd be out with a tennis racket. If the World Cup was on he'd be out with a soccer ball. If rugby was on, it was the rugby ball.

"He never showed a predilection for any game at all until he went to play rugby."
