Their home campaign kicks off on Sunday with the visit of Glasgow Warriors, and the Blues head into the game on the back of a confidence-building 41-26 victory over Zebre on the opening weekend.
That was the Blues' fifth win in six in the PRO12 but Hammett knows they will have their work cut out against Glasgow, who defeated champions Leinster with a penalty at the death to open their own season with a win.
"It's important that we make our home a tough place for teams to come," said Hammett, who saw fly-half Rhys Patchell collect a personal haul of 21 points in victory over Zebre - the Italian team beating the Blues in both their PRO12 meetings last year.
"But just because you think it or want it doesn't mean it is going to happen and we have got to buy into that and know what that looks like. To make a home a fortress would be nice, but words are cheap, we need to perform.
"We go up against Glasgow and I thought they were exceptional on the first weekend and should have won by a clearer margin against Leinster. We are excited about playing at home and it will be fast and open on our home pitch."
It will be Hammett's first home PRO12 game in charge of the Blues having replaced caretaker coaches Paul John and Dale McIntosh at the end of last season.
And he knows Cardiff fans will be focused on results as well as performances in the weeks to come.
Glasgow have won their last six PRO12 encounters against the Blues, although the Welshmen came out on top in both clashes in the European Cup last season.
"You get judged by your results, but the fans can see if our hearts and minds are into the game, whether we win or we lose," added Hammett.
"That is what we will always demand and that is what our leaders within the group are demanding. We go out and leave everything on the Arms Park and nothing to chance."
