The Irish region slumped to a 22-20 loss against Glasgow Warriors on the opening weekend, the side they defeated back in May to win the PRO12 title.
But O'Connor rallied his troops and they responded with a clinical 42-12 victory over Scarlets at the RDS Arena, running in six tries in the process.
And now with a win under his belt, O'Connor admits his side have taken a step in the right direction after their slip-up last week.
"I thought Mick McGrath and Steve Crosbie were very good out there and Benjy Marshall is making good progress," O'Connor said afterwards.
"The squad is moving forward and that's what we're going to need.
"We were disappointed off the back of last week and we put a lot of those things right, which was pleasing.
"There was a different dynamic slightly - they're (Glasgow) a very good side defensively on that little pitch in Glasgow so we knew it would be a bit different."
