But two tries from Alex Cuthbert, plus scores for skipper Gethin Jenkins, Rhys Patchell and Garyn Smith saw the Blues claim a bonus-point 29-5 win for only the third time this season.
And going out on a high, John feels, will mean the Blues fans have some hope for the new season.
"It was pleasing to get a win," he said. "After a difficult year it was a pleasing sign-off and nice to give something back to the fans.
"The first half, against a strong wind, we struggled to keep the ball. We probably tried to use it too much.
"When we did keep it and did the simple things well we managed to get a foothold in the game. It was good to come in with a lead.
"The second half was a similar story, we lost the ball the first few times we had it and when we got a foothold we scored tries."
