Their debut season in the Celtic League saw Mike Ruddock's side finish an impressive third, a feat so far yet to be matched.
The region, one of four Welsh sides to compete in the Guinness PRO12, covers an area of southeast Wales and the side have links to several semi-professional and amateur clubs.
Welsh Premier Division sides Newport and Ebbw Vale rugby clubs still supply their parent club, as do Bedwas and Cross Keys.
A number of notable names have appeared for Dragons over the years, with current star Taulupe Faletau one of four Dragons to have been selected for British and Irish Lions tours while playing for the region.
Lyn Jones:
Lyn Jones, the former Ebbw Vale flanker capped five times by his country in 1993, joined Dragons in June 2013 when he was appointed director of rugby.
He added the role of head coach to his duties for a brief period the following year when Darren Edwards left the organisation in February, and before Kingsley Jones was appointed in June.
Kingsley Jones remains as head coach while namesake Lyn takes on director of rugby duties.
Since their fourth-place finish in the 2004-05 season Dragons have failed to finish higher than eighth in the table, dropping to their worst position of 11th in 2013.
Jones, the former Ospreys and London Welsh coach, was brought in after that disappointing season and has guided the side to consecutive ninth place finishes.
His side sit tenth in the table this season with three rounds to go.
Greatest season, 2003-04:
The region's debut season in the Celtic League was undoubtedly their best.
Mike Ruddock guided them to a third place finish as his side went unbeaten at home.
Labelled at the start of the campaign as a side of rejects, they entered the Celtic League with nothing expected of them.
After a tricky start with two trips to Scarlets, and one over the Irish Sea to Belfast, Ruddock's men began to build some momentum with five wins from six games before their European campaign kicked off.
A loss to Leicester Tigers at home put paid to their hopes of qualification from the pool stage - a feat they have never achieved - but confidence-boosting wins were gained over Ulster and French giants Stade Français.
A combination of teamwork, grit and the leadership of captain Andy Marinos meant the side went into the final weekend of the season with an outside chance of snatching the league title.
A 29-19 win over Welsh rivals Ospreys had helped them into that position but a 56-39 reverse on the final day against Leinster meant Scarlets took the title by four points from Ulster and Dragons.
The following year saw Dragons drop a place to fourth and although they reached the semi-final of the European Challenge Cup in 2007 and against last year, while they reached the Anglo-Welsh Cup semi-final in 2011, their debut Celtic League campaign remains the most memorable.
Greatest XV:
15 Percy Montgomery
The versatile Springbok has been capped more than 100 times for South Africa and racked up more than 200 points during two seasons for the Dragons.
14 Kevin Morgan
Another versatile back who could operate both on the wing and at full-back. Morgan played 75 times for the region and nearly 50 times for his country.
13 Hal Luscombe
A member of the Newport RFC side that became Dragons. Luscombe played a key role in the formative years of the region and when he moved on to Harlequins in 2006 he had more than 50 Dragons appearances to his name.
12 Andy Marinos
A former Dragons captain, he had just one year with the region as the Australian was forced to retire through injury. He skippered the side during their best ever Celtic League season though and with four years under his
belt at Newport RFC before Dragons formed, he was a firm fans' favourite.
11 Aled Brew
Now in his third spell with the club, Brew is the region's all-time record try scorer with 43 in all competitions. The winger has also played for Ospreys and Cardiff Blues, as well as Biarritz, but just can't seem to keep away from
Rodney Parade.
10 Jason Tovey
Who else could it be? The all-time leading point scorer for Dragons with 951 accumulated during two spells with the region, totalling five seasons. Tovey is still doing the business in the Celtic League with Edinburgh.
9 Gareth Cooper
Plenty of competition for the number nine shirt with Wayne and Jonathan Evans putting up a strong fight but Cooper's contribution to a fourth-place Celtic League finish as well as representing his country and the British and Irish Lions make him the standout contender.
1 Rod Snow
Snow was at Newport for eight years before Dragons were formed and stayed with the region for another two years. With 40 regional appearances to his name, the big Canadian is a firm fans favourite.
2 Steve Jones
Jabba, as he was affectionately known, spent ten years with Dragons making a record 180 appearances for the side and being capped five times by Wales.
3 Rhys Thomas
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Thomas made seven appearances for Wales and 126 for Dragons. He was forced to retire in 2012 when playing for Scarlets and suffered a heart attack in training.
4 Luke Charteris
A second-row stalwart at Dragons for nearly a decade. The Wales international made 66 appearances for his country and nearly 150 for his region before moving to France in 2012.
5 Michael Owen
Possibly a little out of position but we had to find a way to get him in the team. Owen captained his country to Six Nations Grand Slam glory in 2005, the same year he was selected for the Lions tour to New Zealand.
6 Dan Lydiate
Famous for his chop tackles, Lydiate made nearly a century of appearances for Dragons between 2007 and 2013 before moving on to France and now the Ospreys. A two-time Grand Slam winner and also has three Lions caps to his name.
7 Jason Forster
Dragons are spoilt for choice in the back row but Forster makes the cut after racking up 24 tries for the region in just 73 appearances, putting him fifth on the all-time scoring list.
8 Taulupe Faletau
The best player ever to pull on a Dragons jersey? Faletau was a one-club man after making 106 appearances for his beloved Dragons since his debut in 2009, however in 2015 it was announced that the marauding No.8 would be leaving Wales for Bath at the end of this season.
