The Italians were really undone in the closing stages as Taqele Naiyaravoro, Jerry Yanuyanutawa and then Horne again all crossed the whitewash for Glasgow to notch up a slightly misleading scoreline of 43-14.
And with Zebre still yet to taste victory in the Guinness PRO12 since January 3, a despondent Bortolami conceded they lost their way after the interval.
"In the second half we were too exposed to the attacks of our opponents, as we were often playing in the wrong areas of the field," he said.
"Unfortunately there is an intensity gap; the team went to confusion in the second half without keeping a cool head.
"That is a shame because we played at par for 50 minutes, and we could have exploited the opportunities that we created.
"Instead we played badly in our 22 and they punished us. They played a simple and uncluttered game.
"We were not able to react to their change in strategy. Analyzing the game, the team made too many mistakes, which at this level has a big impact on the game."
