And while a place in the semi-finals proved elusive, it didn't stop the RaboDirect PRO12 outfit from ending their campaign on a high as they beat 2012 English champions Quins 35-5.
Despite starting slowly Cardiff found themselves 14-5 up at half-time thanks to tries from Filo Paulo and Gavin Evans, with Dan Fish, Tom Williams and replacement Marc Breeze all getting in on the act after the restart.
And while a daunting trip to current RaboDirect PRO12 leaders Munster now awaits for Cardiff with league action back with a bang this weekend, John is adamant they can head to Ireland with their heads held high.
"It was a pleasing result and a good team performance," John told Wales Online. "We said the Anglo-Welsh period was about getting momentum and we got that.
"We struggled to get a foothold in the game and how we were 14-5 up going into the break I am not totally sure.
"In the second half we kept the ball better and played territory better.
"To score five tries was really pleasing and it gives us a big lift before next weekend when we are back in the Pro12. It was nice to get a win for everyone."
