The versatile playmaker was snapped up by the Blues after playing a pivotal role in the Waikato Chiefs' 2013 Super Rugby title.
But Anscombe has only just finished his duties in the Southern Hemisphere, and Hammett is pinpointing the Blues' GUINNESS PRO12 match against Edinburgh at the end of the month as the 23-year-old's potential first game.
"The last thing I want to do is just drag him over and get him straight into it," Hammett told Wales Online.
"We may look to make him available for Edinburgh when we are back into the GUINNESS PRO12. That is something we will discuss with Gareth and do what is best for him and the region.
"When somebody comes from the outside in, it takes time to get used to. I certainly hope there is no pressure on him to perform straight away because that wouldn't be fair.
"We know he is a footballer who can drive a team around but he needs time to settle in to his new surroundings and career at Cardiff Blues first.
"So far this campaign I would say his most effective position has been full-back but he's a guy who has got the skill to play inside centre and he's a big strapping lad, who also has a big kicking game."
