Scarlets' tough start continues with perennial big-hitters Ulster, Leinster and Munster all set to visit Parc y Scarlets before the end of October.
But Phillips, back in contention after two shoulder injuries disrupted his 2014/15 campaign, believes his team must seek to gain an advantage in the early knockings of the season.
"We could look at it as a good start, playing the teams who have a lot of boys away," Phillips told the Scarlets website.
"Glasgow will be losing a lot of players to the World Cup themselves.
"But there are no easy games anymore. The Italian teams are hard teams to beat these days.
"If we can get a good September and aim to be in the top four, we'll be in a good position when the boys come back.
"If we can get some points on the board early it will give us confidence, it makes a huge difference."
