That included a success for the Scarlets at Benetton Treviso that sent them back to the top of the table, but they were pushed all the way.
After going behind early on, they looked to have weathered the storm thanks to two tries from Morgan Allen.
However Treviso fought back and looked good for a first win of the season heading into the last ten minutes.
They were denied though as Steven Shingler kept his nerve to slot a long-range penalty and sneak the 22-20 win.
That allowed them to leapfrog Connacht, who couldn't follow up last week's win at Munster as they fell to defeat in Cardiff.
The Blues have had an up-and-down season but produced a strong performance on home soil with tries from Manoa Vosawai and then Tom James.
Connacht battled hard, scoring two tries of their own through Ian Porter and Eoin McKeon, but ended up falling short, 20-16.
Arguably the performance of the round came at Rodney Parade where the Newport Gwent Dragons sent Munster packing without even a losing bonus point.
The visitors had their chances in the first half, but some great last-ditch defence kept the Dragons in it, and they were able to take control thanks to the boot of Dorian Jones.
A late try from Rynard Landman then sealed the win and pushed Munster out of bonus-point territory in the 22-6 win.
The last Welsh team in action were the Ospreys, who enjoyed themselves in a very open game in Parma against Zebre.
After going behind early to a Kayle van Zyl try, the Ospreys responded, with Justin Tipuric scoring twice in the 39-22 success.
They scored six tries in all, while Zebre couldn't find their way through for a fourth score after Van Zyl's double and a further try from Marcello Violi.
Finally Ulster picked up an important win at home to Edinburgh on Friday night, winning 14-7 at the Kingspan Stadium.
A penalty try and a Rory Scholes effort sent them on their way, and despite a response from Cornell du Preez, Les Kiss' men held on to overtake their visitors in the table.
The other scheduled game this weekend between Glasgow Warriors and Leinster had to be postponed after heavy rain in Glasgow made the Scotstoun pitch unplayable.
TRY OF THE WEEKEND
Treviso might have been denied their first win of the season, but they had the pick of the tries this weekend to open the scoring. Some excellent handling between their backs set up Sam Christie for the first of his tries. After spreading the ball wide Jayden Hayward broke through before quick hands led to the pass back inside for Christie to go over.
BREAK OF THE WEEKEND
It was a tight affair in Belfast but Ulster got the all-important win, thanks in large part to an excellent score from Rory Scholes. Straight off the training paddock Paddy Jackson found Louis Ludik and after his half-break he unleashed Scholes to slice straight through before beating the last man with ease.
PLAY OF THE WEEKEND
No question about this one as Nic Cudd produced the defining moment in the Dragons' win over Munster. With the visitors looking very dangerous in the first half, it seemed they had finally found a way through when Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino was put into space on the left in the first half. The Pumas full-back dummied the last man and seemed certain to score but Cudd got back, made the tackle and forced a knock-on as the chance went begging. It proved crucial for Lyn Jones' men.
PLAYER OF THE WEEKEND
The Ospreys were missing a number of key individuals out in Parma but still got the job done against Zebre, thanks in large part to the efforts of Justin Tipuric. The Wales flanker was everywhere, scoring two tries in which he showed his incredible pace. The first was from an excellent kick-chase, before a second where he burst through like any good centre before stepping the covering defence. Not only that, he was a menace on the floor and set up another try for Jonathan Spratt.
