It meant they failed to build on their victory over Munster in their previous GUINNESS PRO12 encounter and finished 2015 on a losing note.
And while Jones was encouraged by the way his team played he was left scratching his head as to how they managed to finish up with just a losing bonus point to show for their efforts.
"There is a double-edged sword, the result and the performance," he said.
"We were delighted with the control we put on the game from a team perspective.
"We had a lot of pressure in their 22, but every time we only took three points and lost a number of opportunities.
"In sport it's not always the best team that wins. We failed to massage the scoreboard and it just wasn't a big enough buffer for what was always going to be a big last 10 minutes.
"Our conversion rate of pressure into points wasn't high enough and you've got to give credit to the Blues where it's due. They stuck in there, defended well and played with their hearts on their sleeves."
