But despite being converted into a second row of late, Coombs claims he still approaches the game in the same way as he did in his teenage years.
And the 28-year-old believes it could bring more success with the Dragons between now and the end of the season.
"My game hasn't changed from when I was playing for Newport Youth really, it's quite a simple game that I play, I don't light the world on fire, I hit rucks, I tackle, I carry the ball and scrummage," said Coombs.
"It's a new thing to be playing second row but I'm really enjoying it and I'm hoping to spend a few more years in the second row for Dragons.
"It's a simple game, and I never try and put any pressure on myself and that's how I approached the Six Nations and that's what gets me through."
