But he is back in contention ahead of Friday's trip to face Ulster at Ravenhill having played 20 minutes for Newport at the weekend.
And the 29-year-old winger - who also missed the start of the season having undergone knee surgery in the summer - is hoping he features in Belfast.
"I'm feeling really good and it was awesome to get 20 minutes of action," he told the South Wales Argus.
"Now I've just got to train hard and hopefully get considered for the upcoming games.
"It's been a very frustrating season for me and after my knee operation I put a lot of work into my rehab and thought I would come back and really get going, only to get injured again.
"But that's rugby and now I just want to finish the season strongly, I owe that to my teammates, the management and also myself."
Chavhanga has made just eight appearances for the Dragons this season, and is out of contract in the summer.
And having spent much of the campaign on the sidelines he is hoping he can yet have a say in a Dragons shirt this term.
"As you get older you realise what an incredible privilege it is to get paid to play rugby," he said.
"I really appreciate how lucky I am. I'm back fit and have put my hand up for selection. That's all I can do and hopefully I can get a bit of a run for the Dragons."
