Wins for both the Scarlets and the Ospreys had increased the pressure on Schmidt's troops in the race for the top four and for a while it looked as if Munster were going to derail their push.
But with just two games to go Leinster find themselves six points clear of fifth-placed Scarlets and their destiny very much in their own hands.
And Schmidt, who takes his troops to bottom side Zebre next up before their final game of the season at home to Ospreys on May 3, insists they are handily placed.
"The most important thing was to get a result," said Schmidt. "We knew how difficult it would be. We are delighted with the result, it puts us in control of our own destiny."
