The result ensured the Scots finished bottom of Pool 2 in the Heineken Cup, but with some important league fixtures to come Townsend has told his troops to refocus.
Glasgow face Connacht on February 9 next before trips to Wales and Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons respectively.
"We do not have a game for three weeks until Connacht come to Scotstoun on February 9 and when that one rolls around we must make sure our performance is as intense as (the game against Toulon)," Townsend told the Glasgow Evening Times.
"The performance now has to be used as a springboard for the remainder of our PRO12 campaign.
"We could say that it was a shame that the players did not get a draw or even a victory, but we learned a lot from this game and we have earned respect from the European champions.
"But I have to mention the crowd. We had over 6,000 at Scotstoun on a stinker of a day, and their backing was tremendous.
"At the end, when we were besieging their line I thought the crowd were unbelievable and our players responded."
