Munster are still chasing a home semi-final in the RaboDirect PRO12 play-offs and now head into the final weekend just one point behind Glasgow Warriors in second.
Rob Penney's side kept pace with the Warriors with a seven-try win in Edinburgh but O'Connell believes the 55-12 scoreline was perhaps a little flattering.
However, the veteran second-row was happy to admit Munster are clicking nicely into gear in time for the play-offs.
"We had a hell of a lot to play for with an outside shout at a home semi-final, and trying to secure third for ourselves, whereas Edinburgh probably didn't have a lot to play for," he told the Irish Examiner.
"We didn't start well but once we got the ball in our hands we were very good at exploiting opportunities. Our first try was a really good one where we pulled them from one side of the pitch to the other and finished it off well.
"We made a lot of breaks playing that kind of rugby and it is satisfying knowing we can play that kind of rugby. We mauled well at times earlier this season but it's good to know we can mix it up when we want to."
