However, rather than take on the role of defensive coach that was reported, McGahan will act as coaching co-ordinator in a new-look Australian set up.
McGahan, who has been in charge of RaboDirect PRO12 outfit Munster forfour seasons, will join defence coach Andrew Blades and coaching assistant Nick Scrivener in new roles.
All three will be in place for the one-off Test against Scotland on June 5 before Australia welcome Wales for a three-match series Down Under.
"McGahan's experience as a head coach is considered a major asset for the newly created role," an Australian Rugby Union statement read:
"He will have a significant involvement in the overall co-ordination of the coaching and management team, as well as the player liaison, assisting head coach Robbie Deans."
