Currently Edinburgh Rugby remain the only team with a 100 per cent winning record, and rightfully top the Magners League table for a second consecutive week. They are followed in second place by Newport Gwent Dragons, a team perhaps not so familiar with being placed amongst the leaders, but whose gates are proving that fans will support a winning team.
Dragons overcame the previous second placed team, Glasgow Warriors, with a bonus point victory to claim their position, the only game of the round where the defeated team were denied a losing bonus point. It is a measure of the closeness of the Magners League that 4 out of the 5 games last weekend were decide by a margin of less than one score.
Whenever you have games as close as this, one of the post match topics of discussion for fans around the grounds will always be the performance of the "man in the middle", We are lucky in the Magners League to have a panel of excellent referees representative of each union, as well as an enthusiastic sponsor of match officials in Specsavers.
You may have read in the press that Specsavers have recently renewed their sponsorship deal with Celtic Rugby. As their marketing director Richard Holmes points out Specsavers have demonstrated that the humorous link between match officials and an optical retailer has been extremely well received by supporters. I would like to thank them for their continued commitment, which also includes sponsorship of the Specsavers Fairplay League, rewarding the team with the fewest disciplinary points against them at the end of the season with £10,000 to be used on their youth development programme. Currently Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors are jointly top of this league, although there is still a long way to go to the end of the season.
A team cannot win the Magners League in the first few weeks of the season, but they can lay down strong foundations and put themselves in a position so that when the league stage finishes they can ensure a top four placing and qualify for the play-off stage. To achieve that, this season more than ever, every point will be vital, so please come along and support your team throughout their campaign.
