Two months later he was scoring his first try for Ireland on his debut against Canada from full back and eight months on he will become a Lion when he joins Jamie Roberts in the centre against the Royal XV in Phokeng. It's is better than 'Roy of the Rovers', yet Earls doesn't want it to stop there. Now his eyes are set on the next target - bidding for a Test place against the world champions Springboks.
"Not in a million years did I think I'd be going on a Lions tour, yet here I am in Johannesburg preparing to play in the first game on the 2009 tour," said Earls.
"It's a dream come true. I haven't even played a Six Nations game yet, but I'll become a Lion on Saturday. My goal at the start of the season was just to get a few starts for Munster, and not even become a regular. And there were no thoughts about possibly playing for Ireland this quickly - it has been an incredible season."
Three members of the Lions side at the weekend were on the field in Edinburgh when Earls made his first start for Munster in the Magners League - team mates Ronan O'Gara, Paul O'Connell and Edinburgh skipper Mike Blair.
Earls went on to score eight tries in 14 games as the men in red romped to the title and now he wants to make as big an impact in an even more famous red jersey.
"I grew up watching most of these players playing in the Six Nations and World Cups. It's a dream come true to be actually playing alongside them," said Earls.
"I grew up with Paul O'Connell because he used to play with my Dad, He's a man I would do anything for, so it's great to have him captaining the side on my Lions debut. To be fair, all the players have accepted me well, even though I've been carrying the Lion mascot around with me as the youngest player in the party at present.
"That will change when Leigh Halfpenny joins us."
