Munster fly-half Ronan O'Gara traded a conversion and two penalties with opposite number Matthew Morgan as both sides proved inseparable in a 13-13 draw.
O'Gara converted Damien Varley's try just after the break before Morgan returned the favour just eight minutes later as Jonathan Thomas went over for Ospreys.
The draw keeps Munster in sixth place with seven points separating them from Scarlets in the fourth and final play-off spot while Leinster are third another nine ahead.
However head coach Penney wouldn't digress either way as to whether Munster have anything more to play for in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season.
"Who knows?" said Penney. "I'm no good at maths. I had all this thrown at me in the Heineken Cup. I don't have a crystal ball.
"All I can do is prepare the group as best I can for the next game. I was really proud of the effort out there and the way they went about their work."
