He has not featured for Eric Elwood's side since January's victory over Newport Gwent Dragons however and has just undergone surgery on a troublesome hip and groin injury.
"He is out of the summer tour and is facing four to six months before he is back," Elwood told the Irish Independent.
"It's disappointing for him but the most important thing is for him to make a full recovery and build from there."
McSharry impressed for Ireland Wolfhounds against England Saxons in January and had been tipped in some quarters to take part in Ireland's summer tour to the United States and Canada and win his first full international cap.
But he will now spend his summer recovering from injury and he will miss Connacht's RaboDirect PRO12 run-in as Elwood's side look to continue their impressive recent form and improve on last year's eighth-place finish.
