In fact last week's 30-10 success over Edinburgh, coupled with Munster's loss in Newport, means that Smith's side could yet finish in the top half if they win their remaining two games and Munster lose their fixture.
But rather than feel satisfied by the team's performances, which has already seen them record their highest points tally and equal their highest number of wins, Smith believes there is still a lot to work to do, most notably their discipline after two yellow cards in the closing stages of the Edinburgh win.
He said: "It's pleasing if you look back but then again if we think of all the little things we have got wrong then we have some regrets. I want to get rid of them. We need to win often, the table doesn't really interest me.
"In certain areas of the pitch we need to be more intelligent. That will be our main target this week, we don't want to be a team that gets penalised a lot.
"It's not our intention to be a team that gives away a lot of penalties so we will have to work on that."
