As a result, he has missed Ireland's Six Nations campaign and Bowe does not expect to be back in action for Ulster's Heineken Cup quarter-final with Saracens at Twickenham on April 6.
But Bowe hopes to return to boost Ulster in their pursuit of the RaboDirect PRO12 crown, having played a key role in the province's march to the top of the table with 11 straight victories.
Since then, they have tailed off somewhat but Bowe revealed his recovery is on track and he plans to take to the field again next month.
"The knee is coming along well. Hopefully, I'll be back within the next four or five weeks," said Bowe.
"I'm 12 weeks post operation at this stage and it's meant to be a 16-week recovery period."
