Should he play any part in Rome and come through it unscathed he will be in line to feature when Ulster seek to return to the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 table when they travel to Murrayfield to face Edinburgh in nine days' time.
Gilroy says he has learned a lot from his maiden Six Nations campaign, and wants to take the experience with him when he resumes club duties.
"It's been an amazing experience I have really enjoyed it," he said. "It is where I want to be - I don't want to be anywhere else.
"It has been very challenging but that is a great experience. It's a long championship as I have found out and there are injuries. The players who do well are the ones who consistently go through and accept that challenge, not only physically but mentally as well, but it has been great - I have really enjoyed it."
Gilroy admits he has had to work hard in training to ensure his fitness for the trip to Italy, and for the remainder of Ulster's RaboDirect PRO12 campaign.
"I had been afraid I would miss the game altogether," said the 22-year-old. "But I worked hard over the last week and a half and did a lot of rehab and a lot of work with the physios."
