The victory moved Leinster back to within two points of second-placed Glasgow Warriors.
But 24 hours earlier Connacht had got the better of title hopefuls Ospreys - Leinster making the most of the reigning champions slip up to put a six-point gap between themselves and their Welsh rivals.
And despite admitting his delight at his own side's performance, Schmidt also saved some praise for Connacht as well.
"I'm delighted with the result," he said. "There were holes in the performance but the result is exactly what we need.
"We have got to stay up with that top four and with Connacht doing us a favour against the Ospreys it allows us put a small distance between us and Ospreys in the short term at least."
