That leaves Wales with a trio of uncapped hookers to choose from in Parry, Emyr Phillips and Scott Baldwin. And regardless of who gets the nod, Appleyard is convinced the tour will ensure the young front rower returns to the Dragons all the better for the experience.
"To be called into the training squad will be invaluable to him, to put on that kit and be involved with Wales is a huge boost to a young player," the former Wales flanker told the South Wales Argus.
"It's great recognition for Sam, especially since it was (ex-Wales hooker) Robin McBryde who called him up.
"There are plenty of strong hookers in Wales but this shows Sam that he is being looked at by the national coaches and if he keeps on improving then there is no reason why he can't be called up again."
Appleyard worked with Haverfordwest-born Parry during his stint at Llandovery and has every confidence in the talented youngster.
"It has always been clear that Sam has huge potential," said the Dragons coach. "His lineout throwing is fantastic and so is his stature, he is strong, powerful, dynamic and brave.
"The only thing he was missing was exposure to regional rugby and to gain the experience that comes with that.
"He has gone up against international hookers this season and performed well. That can only give a boost to a young player's confidence."
