Davies admits negotiations are still a long way from completion but did concede the Welsh international was a player he admired.
"At the moment we're just looking for that experience up front and we're busy getting on with it," said Davies.
"Gethin is a fantastic player, we've said this, a world-class player. We'll just have to wait and see.
"It's been on and off but at the moment he's a Toulon player and that's where it stands. If things change we'll announce that when we can.
"We haven't got a massive amount of finance to restructure the squad at this present time.
"Everybody knows we're looking for some experienced forwards up front.
"We've signed Matthew Rees - he'll be a great asset to us, along with the hookers we've got who have come through this year."
