Jason spent two years with the Dragons Academy before joining making his senior debut in April 2008. Equally able at fullback and outside half, Jason has exceptional composure and maturity on the ball which makes him a great asset to the side in either position.
Jason made his Newport RFC debut against Aberavon in 2006 at Rodney Parade and became youngest ever Newport Premier League player. He scored 2 tries from fullback against Maesteg Sept 16th 2006 and became Newport's youngest Premier League scorer.
The versatile back has racked up more records on the way, becoming the first ever Dragons player to get a try hat-trick in a competitive match when he went over the line 3 times against Ulster in 2009 and then breaking the record for points scored in a match against the Ospreys in the LV= Cup in January 2010 with 2 conversions and 7 penalties to his name.
Director of Rugby Lyn Jones said, "I am delighted to welcome Jason back to Gwent. He really impressed me when I had my first coaching stint here. Things haven't really worked out for him at the Blues but we are looking forward to his return to Gwent and helping him to achieve his full potential."
Jason Tovey said, ""I'm really delighted to be rejoining a rejuvenated Gwent squad, last season proved a difficult one for me personally, but I'm delighted to be working with Lyn again, and looking forward to improving my game and helping Gwent get back up the league where they belong. I've missed playing in front of the Rodney Parade supporters and hope I can add to an exciting and optimistic few years back in Newport"
Tovey will return to Rodney Parade during pre season training but the hallowed turf, that he was once used to, will not be the same having been completely renovated with a new drainage system and being entirely resurfaced.
The signing was confirmed by Cardiff Blues:
Cardiff Blues can confirm that outside half Jason Tovey will be leaving the region to re-join Newport Gwent Dragons.
Tovey joined the Cardiff Blues in 2012 and made 17 appearances for the region including the Boxing Day match against the Dragons.
Jason Tovey has signed a three year contract with the Dragons and will return to Rodney Parade during pre-season training
Talking about Jason Tovey's departure Cardiff Blues Chief Executive, Richard Holland said,
"I would like to thank Jason for his commitment to Cardiff Blues over the last year and I would like to wish him all the best in the future."
