The victory - only their third in 14 games against the Blues - lifted the Dragons up to sixth in the RaboDirect PRO12, leaving them nine points shy of the play-offs.
And ahead of the two sides meeting again in the return fixture on New Year's Day, Tovey admitted he was feeling right at home with the Dragons.
"It's always a little bit special when you beat your former team," he said.
"But the past is the past now, and you just move on and we're just happy as a team now we're going to start pushing up the table.
"Obviously last year was pretty frustrating for me.
"It's nice to be playing some games consistently and in a position that I want to be playing in.
"I enjoy the fact that this club has a personality and it compliments my game.
"It's a very down to earth place and you can see how well we all get on as a squad. There are no superstars in the team. We all play for each other."
