Glasgow Warriors sit fifth in the RaboDirect PRO12 table but have two games in hand over all the teams above them in the table after losing two games to the weather over the festive period.
Gray's last appearance for the Warriors came in the 28-16 victory at Ospreys in late November but is now back fit and Johnson is excited by his return.
"Jonny played Test footy in the autumn. He's had significant ankle trouble and is on his way back," he said.
"He's a wonderful player, a special player. You'll be talking about him in years to come.
"So he's part of the growth and development of this Scottish nation."
