The 25-year-old, who toured Australia with the British & Irish Lions last year, will be receive further treatment in an Edinburgh hospital.
Scotland head coach Scott Johnson admitted after the game that the New Zealand-born back's outlook was not positive and his prediction has been proven correct.
"It does not look good for Sean Maitland, but we have confidence in some of the young ones," said Johnson.
Scottish Rugby's Head of Performance Medical, Paul McGinley added: "Sean suffered a concussion as well as injury to his right leg yesterday.
"He will be subject to further investigation today at Spire Murrayfield hospital and will be assessed later by consultant surgeon Graham Lawson."
And Maitland's Warriors teammate Tommy Seymour will be bidding to step into his wing role when Scotland face England this weekend.
