After having Manoa Vosawai sent off in just the sixth minute for a spear tackle it was always going to be an uphill task against Glasgow Warriors - the Italian side eventually losing 41-7.
With the RaboDirect PRO12 now taking a break until February 8, Smith's side will have ample opportunity to right the wrongs of their Warriors clash.
And the Treviso coach is adamant they'll be doing just that.
"We are a team that creates the most without scoring. We're working on that. We're on the right path though, even if the result weighs on us. There is still a lot to do though," said Smith.
"Obviously it was a difficult game to watch and it got worse watching it back. It was decisive and it's amazing how we dominated so many aspects of the game but were still beaten, conceding five tries. Having one man down they were able to take advantage.
"Their first three tries all came from inside their own 22. It was tough to accept, especially with three minutes left we were desperate to score and allowed them to score two late tries and get the bonus point.
"We're very disappointed with the result but from a rugby point of view I am happy. We kept fighting with a man less. The result doesn't reflect the game. We need to keep working hard."
