Two tries from Henry Pygros and one-a-piece for Sean Maitland and Nikola Matawalu sealed the 29-10 victory and propelled Glasgow up to fourth and back into play-off contention.
It was Pygros who got the ball rolling for Glasgow in the first minute and three minutes later Matawalu got in on the act.
The Italians managed to claw one back but the hosts eventually ran away convincing winners and Townsend was left buoyed by his side's attacking prowess - in particular young star Finn Russell.
"I'm absolutely thrilled with the bonus point. I was really pleased with how we started and I thought we set about our tasks very well and very quickly with two tries in the first few minutes," said Townsend.
"There were some sloppy moments and we were disappointed with the try we gave away, but I was really pleased with how we kept them out in the second-half.
"It's an important win to keep us in the mix for the top four.
"Finn has looked very composed every time he's played for us this season.
"I think playing at 12 he makes the right decisions on the ball, he knows when to pass and when to run and he's also got that kicking option and his tackle at the end to force a turnover was excellent so it's great that he's playing so well.
"You want that competition for places and it's great to see someone like Finn developing, he obviously finished the game at 10 and plays 12, so the more depth we have and the more people we have challenging for places the better."
