He certainly looked at home in the RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Treviso, kicking three conversions and a penalty in the 29-10 win.
It was Russell's fifth start in the competition this season and his ninth RaboDirect PRO12 appearance in all and Townsend is impressed by the 21-year-old's progress.
"Finn has looked very composed every time he's played for us this season," he told the Herald.
"I think playing at 12 he makes the right decisions on the ball, he knows when to pass and when to run and he's also got that kicking option.
"His tackle at the end to force a turnover was excellent so it's great that he's playing so well."
