Kickers need to have a minimum of 20 attempts at goal to qualify for the award, and in the closing stages Finn Russell of Glasgow Warriors has achieved that with 21 out of 24 for a 87.50% success rate, just edging out, for the moment, long term leader JJ Hanrahan of Munster with 87.27% and Gareth Davies of the Cardiff Blues with 86.05%.
The Award has gone to Leinster players in the last two years. Johnny Sexton winning in 2012 with a remarkable 90% success rate, and Ian Madigan just edging out Leigh Halfpenny of the Cardiff Blues last year. Both players tied on 86.96 %, with Madigan taking the trophy on count-back after landing his last 21 kicks consecutively.
The Rhino Golden Boot will be presented to the eventual winner at the RaboDirect PRO12 Awards Dinner in Edinburgh on May 11th at the conclusion of the regular season and ahead of the play-offs.
