A straightforward 54-0 victory over Zebre made certain the Warriors will have a home semi-final for the first time in the RaboDirect PRO12, with Munster their opponents next Friday.
The Warriors put together a run of eight straight victories to finish the regular season in second spot but were beaten at Scotstoun by their Irish semi-final opponents 13-6 back in October.
No side has won a play-off semi-final away from home but Townsend insists the quality and experience possessed by Munster will make his side's aim very difficult.
"We have a momentum going and we want to carry it on. We know there are two games left in the season and we want to get into that final and do as well as we can," Towsend told The Herald.
"It's great to get a home semi-final because it is tough to win away in the play-offs. We know we have to play well.
"We are playing against a team that has been one of the best in Europe over the past 10-15 years.
"They beat us here earlier in the season and we beat them at their place. I'm sure it will be a close game."
