The 23-year-old scored one try in 14 RaboDirect PRO12 appearances as the Dragons finished ninth, missing out on a place in next season's new Rugby Champions Cup by six points.
South Africa are ranked second in the world behind New Zealand and feature the likes of Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Bismarck du Plessis and Francois Louw in their pack.
Faletau is well aware of the challenge the Springboks will present and insists Wales have no option but to match their physicality if they are to stand any chance of success in the two-test series.
"They are known for their physicality and what they bring. It's no secret and it's going to be tough," he told the South Wales Argus.
"South Africa will be a test for everyone out there. They are one of the most physical sides out there. That's how they play - straight up.
"There is no secret about how they play or what they will do. They are very physical men. We just have to carry the ball, be hard, direct and physical.
"I am looking forward to it. It will be my first time out there. The tour to South Africa is something anyone would look forward to - to go down there and challenge yourself."
With Cardiff Blues Sam Warburton and Ospreys Justin Tipuric both absent from the tour through injury, Faletau could find himself shifted around the back row to provide cover.
He has experience at No.7, having filled the position for the Dragons against Munster in the 2010/11 season and in Wales' bronze medal match against Australia in the 2011 World Cup, and he insists he is happy to play anywhere.
"Whatever position I play, it's an honour to wear that jersey for Wales," Faletau added.
"Obviously Justin and Sam are specialist sevens. Maybe it changes against South Africa because they tend to play without one. But the boys who are there are capable of filling in for whoever is missing.
"The back rowers we have got are quality enough to fill in. They know what the challenges are ahead of us."
