Super 15 star Gareth Anscombe is preparing to fly into Wales after agreeing to join the Blues at the end of October.
Yet Patchell laid down a marker at the weekend in the Blues' 41-26 victory away to Zebre in their GUINNESS PRO12 opener.
Now the 21-year-old will be aiming to carry on the good work in this weekend's clash with last season's runners-up Glasgow.
"You can only control the controllables I suppose," Patchell told Wales Online.
"Gareth Anscombe is obviously a high quality player. He's performed well in the Super 15 and, as and when Gareth Anscombe comes, we will cross that bridge.
"But for the time being I have got an opportunity potentially.
"Gareth Davies played phenomenally well at the tail end of last season and Simon Humberstone did a great job for us as well filling in, so there is plenty of competition without Mr Anscombe coming over in October or November.
"We will see how that one goes, but for the time being we are busy getting better."
