The Blues found themselves trailing 24-10 in the second half but fought back and Sam Hobbs' late try was enough salvage a draw.
The result means Hammett's men end a streak of defeats which has seen them lose to Glasgow Warriors, Ulster and Leinster in recent weeks.
The Welsh side went into the break level at 10-10 but allowed Connacht to race ahead with two tries in four second-half minutes - leaving Hammett frustrated.
"For me personally, I thought we went backward from where we've been," he told Wales Online.
"So for us, the challenge is to get that right. We need to freshen and make sure we bring our best game next weekend.
"It's just those little things in terms of the work off the ball, the ability to get up before your opponent, the ability when you are up against it at a five metre scrum or line-out to make sure your body is bang on, you are physical and up for the fight.
"I don't see any week any bigger than the other. For us, it's about improving from where we've been.
"I thought our first half performance, in terms of where we wanted to attack, was good.
"But again, as has been biting us, there were unforced errors, like kicking the ball out on the full, not finding touch from penalties."
