Te'o broke his arm during Leinster's 33-8 GUINNESS PRO12 victory over Edinburgh last weekend, in what was his debut for the club after switching codes from rugby league to union in October.
The 27-year-old, who was born in New Zealand, made the move to union after helping the South Sydney Rabbitohs to glory but was forced off after just 20 minutes in his first appearance at the RDS Arena.
The centre has since had successful surgery on the fracture but is expected to be out of action for an estimated six weeks.
And O'Connor acknowledged that the injury will put Te'o behind the eight-ball as he tries to adapt to the game but insists the club are making the best of the situation.
"It is part of the game but it is difficult when you are a new player who is trying to assimilate to a new code," said O'Connor.
"Thankfully, he has a good big game temperament. The positives are that he can take a look at the Edinburgh game and try to study it a bit.
"But he is going to get the greatest learning from playing and that is the most frustrating thing.
"He is still finding his feet and learning players' names. He is still trying to learn the nuances of the game.
"But, he wouldn't be here if we didn't see things previously. It doesn't change anything but it does put it back a few weeks."
