Poolman: Muliaina impact lifting Connacht

Since making his GUINNESS PRO12 bow in a bonus-point victory over Zebre last month, the former All Black has made three appearances in all competitions, during which Connacht have scored 11 tries.

The 34-year-old played a pivotal role in last weekend's European Challenge Cup win against Bayonne, with Poolman the main benefactor as he ran in two tries in a 42-19 triumph.

And with Pat Lam's side facing a tough return fixture in Bayonne this weekend before three consecutive Irish derbies in the GUINNESS PRO12, Poolman admits he and his fellow backs will keep seeking Muliaina's input.

"He just brings a lot of experience - I know that is a cliché but it is what he has," Poolman told the Irish Times.

"If we do a video analysis, he will give loads of tips to the lads of what lines to run and when to change angles and where we might use a player differently to create more space for a guy outside or where we want to strike.

"In phase play, when he says something to you, you just trust it because you know that he has the experience and knows what he is talking about.

"The first time I played with him, I was really lifted by his presence and he doesn't have to do anything. His just being there lifts everyone.

"We have Bayonne away and then three Irish derbies - Leinster away, Ulster away and Munster at home so it is a tough month.

"We just need to keep on top of our skills and keep improving and going at it."
