Glasgow Warriors not only missed out on the chance to extend their three-game winning run but lost a piece of silverware too, as Edinburgh overturned a ten-point deficit to regain the 1872 Cup.
But Gregor Townsend's troops remain well-perched in second and still have one proud record intact - a GUINNESS PRO12 winning streak of 14 games at Scotstoun.
They have not lost at their base since Newport Gwent Dragons came to town in November 2013 and another Welsh region, Scarlets, face the task of overhauling more than a year's worth of momentum on Friday.
Factoring in Scarlets' dismal run on the road - having failed to win any of their last 12 away matches in all competitions - a Glasgow win would seem all but ensured. However, Wayne Pivac and company will be brimming with confidence after administering a New Year's shock to league leaders Ospreys.
Despite that loss at Parc y Scarlets, the Ospreys still top the table and much of the GUINNESS PRO12 charts.
Dan Biggar has been successful with 36 of 39 kicks - an astonishing 92.31 per cent conversion rate - while Rhys Webb leads the league's try scorers with seven from eight appearances.
Six of those scores have come at home and this week the Ospreys welcome a Newport Gwent Dragons side who have not taken a victory away from the Liberty Stadium since October 2010.
However, the Dragons are enjoying their travels at the moment after winning three of their last four away games in all competitions.
Third-placed Munster are another team to have received a wake-up call to start 2015 as Pat Lam's resurgent Connacht mounted a second-half comeback on New Year's Day.
Munster now lick their wounds in time for a visit to Zebre and there will be no player more motivated to win than club hero Donncha O'Callaghan, who could make his 150th PRO12 appearance in Parma.
And though Zebre are on a run of three defeats, their Irish opponents have not had an away day to cheer about since a November 21 victory over the Dragons.
Two form teams in Connacht and Edinburgh meet at the Sportsground, with the latter only tasting defeat once in their last five games.
However, Connacht hold a historical advantage having won three of their last four encounters with Alan Solomons' troops - and are yet to be defeated at home this season.
Ulster slipped out of the play-offs last week due to a loss against Leinster but will be confident of a return to form against Benetton Treviso - they have been victorious on their last seven encounters.
But with Treviso basking in back-to-back victories over Italian rivals Zebre and Ulster's recent away form reading played six, lost six in all tournaments, an upset is far from impossible.
And Leinster will look to build on their return to the top four at the Blues, who are winless in their last four clashes with Irish provinces.
Mark Hammett will need to rewrite history as his side's last triumph against Leinster in their last 16 fixtures came at home in February 2011.
