Montpellier visit Scotstoun on Sunday for a crucial pool clash in Europe's top competition and Townsend admits the 22-7 league win over the Scarlets last weekend was the perfect preparation.
With the victory Glasgow maintained their 100 per cent home record in the GUINNESS PRO12 - and kept up the pressure on league leaders Ospreys - but with two wins from two realistically needed to progress any further in Europe Townsend knows his side cannot afford to ease off the gas.
"It was great to get a win in front of our home fans but we know Montpellier will be a different game," he said. "They play differently to Scarlets and will pose different threats.
"Not only was it great to get a win after the defeat to Edinburgh, I think that was the best we have played for a number of weeks.
"The first half was probably the best we have played since the European win over Bath.
"I thought with the conditions it would be lucky if any team scored a try, so for us to get three was very pleasing because we were playing a very good team and had to play well to beat them.
"They had to play into the wind and rain in the first half and the guys were brilliant, even though we were two points down at half-time.
"We worked them really hard and showed what we can do."
