In their first league match since January 9, due to cup commitments, Connacht shipped four tries as they lost 32-14 to Scarlets, with Niyi Adeolokun scoring a late consolation for Lam's men.
The two teams are now locked on 33 points in the table, with Connacht currently occupying the all-important sixth-place.
Though if they are to retain their European ambition Lam knows Connacht must up the ante, starting with Sunday's game at Newport Gwent Dragons.
"We have expectations and so do our supporters and we were below that," Lam told the Irish Times.
"We had quite a young group out there, but as a team we did not execute well and the flow of the game changed dramatically with indiscipline.
"There's still a long way to go, so we will move on to the next game."
